Submit an Abstract

The ICPA Program Committee invites people interested in presenting papers at the Association's 2011 Annual Conference to submit ideas for consideration.

The theme of the ICPA Conference this year, the Association's 13th Annual Conference, is 'Unlocking the Second Prison'. The main thrust of the conference will be community corrections and various efforts to support reintegration or re-entry of offenders. Though other aspects of corrections may be considered (as per the focus areas noted below), priority will be given to those papers that are clearly related to the Conference's main theme.

We welcome any proposals (for individual papers, symposia or panel presentations) within this general theme but would particularly welcome papers in the following areas:

  • Best Practices in Re-entry Programmes and Initiatives;
  • Community Corrections and Probation;
  • Issues and Challenges in Parole & Probation;
  • Risk Management and Case Management;
  • Care and Supervision of Offenders with Mental Health Needs;
  • Community Corrections Needs of Female Offenders;
  • Managing Sex Offenders in the Community;
  • 'Marketing' Community Corrections;
  • Healthcare (prison and community-based);
  • Strategies for Improving Leadership in Corrections;
  • Innovation in Community-Based Interventions;
  • Innovation in Offender Supervision Practices in the Community;
  • Facility Planning and Design for Community Corrections;
  • Challenges for Corrections in Post Conflict and Developing Nations
  • Staff Safety;
  • Staff Training;
  • Correctional Leadership;
  • Community Corrections Experience in Post-Conflict and Developing Nations;
  • The Management of Radical Offenders in the Community and in Prison;
  • Government-Community Partnerships in Throughcare Rehabilitation;
  • Rehabilitating Youth Offenders;
  • Community-based Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Models;
Presentations should offer creative views of anticipated changes in trends, technologies, operational practices, and system responses to managing diverse offender populations.

This year, the Committee will identify a number of outstanding submissions for presentation at the main Plenary Sessions at the conference. The selection will be based on relevance to the topic of community corrections, breadth of innovative practice and evidence of a strong research/empirical base. Individuals and/or agencies who may be interested in being considered for a Plenary Session are encouraged to present a coherent and convincing proposal of no more than 400 words. Preference will be given to those proposals that are developed with across-agency or across-jurisdiction collaboration.

The ICPA conference attracts some 350-400 delegates from more than 60 countries. The format of the conference is a mixture of plenary sessions and workshops. The maximum time allocation for individual workshop papers is 45 minutes. We welcome presentations in either English or Spanish. There will be limited Spanish translation facilities at the conference. Consideration will be given to papers in any other language providing the presenter can supply a suitable interpreter).

The closing date for submissions is 1st June 2011 and the ICPA's Programme Committee will inform you of the outcome shortly after this date.
