Submit an Abstract

The ICPA Program Committee invites individuals, agencies and organizations interested in presenting papers at the Association’s 2013 Annual Conference to submit ideas for consideration. The theme of our 15th Annual Conference is “Thinking Outside the Cell: Reducing the Use of Imprisonment”.

The conference will be held in the Antlers Hilton hotel in Colorado Springs, USA, 27th October – 1st November 2013. Other than an emergency shifting of the Annual Conference from Lima, Peru to Miami, Florida in 2003, this will be the first time that ICPA has planned and held its Annual Conference in the USA.


BACKGROUND AND GUIDANCE

The Conference is focusing on approaches and strategies for reducing the use of imprisonment because ICPA believes this is one of the most significant challenges facing corrections, not only in North America, but also throughout the world. As such, we welcome proposals (for individual papers, symposia or panel presentations) relating to the general theme, and particularly, in the following related subtopics:

Criminal justice process improvement to reduce use of imprisonment;   Engaging criminal justice partners (e.g., police, judiciary) in reducing use of imprisonment;
Innovations in use of diversion and alternatives to imprisonment;   Innovation in offender supervision strategies in parole and probation;
Evidence-informed practice in risk management, case management and re-entry programs and initiatives;   Findings from applied research projects related to reducing the use of imprisonment;
Government - community partnerships for reducing use of imprisonment;   Prison planning and design that supports progressive behavioral change and reentry;
Leadership in managing change in corrections;   “Marketing” of community corrections;

Facility planning and design for community corrections and normative transitional facilities;

   Managing special need offenders in the community:
- Young Offenders; Women; Substance misusers; Offenders with mental health problems; Sex offenders; Radicalized offenders

In selecting papers, priority will be given to those that are clearly related to the Conference’s main theme. However, papers relating to other aspects of corrections may be considered, especially those that are related to ongoing ICPA Committee work concerned with Staff Development and Training; Healthcare in Corrections; Architecture; Applications of IT in Corrections; Corrections in Post-Conflict and Developing Nations; and Applications of Research to Correctional Policy and Practice.

This year we also wish to welcome submissions from the academic world, and especially ‘poster presentations’ from graduate students in criminal justice, outlining the implications of research findings for key correctional policy and practice issues.

Conference submissions should offer creative analysis of potentially complex issues, emphasize research-informed perspectives, and highlight anticipated changes in correctional trends, technologies, operational practices and system responses. Results from applied research case studies in operative correctional systems are of special interest.

Again this year the Program Committee will identify a number of outstanding submissions for presentation at the main ‘Plenary’ sessions at the conference. The selection will be based on relevance to the conference topic, breath of innovative practice and evidence of a strong research/empirical base. Preference will be given to those proposals that are developed with across agency or across-jurisdiction collaboration.

The ICPA Annual Conference attracts some 350-450 delegates from more than 60 countries. The format of the conference is a mixture of plenary sessions and workshops. The maximum time allocation for individual workshop papers is normally 45 minutes.

Since English is the primary language of ICPA conferences, we welcome papers in English but consideration will be given to papers in any other language providing the presenter can supply a suitable interpreter and, ideally, translated copies of the paper for distribution.

Note: ICPA does not provide financial support or assistance for speakers. All presenters will be required to cover their own expenses for conference registration fees, travel and accommodation.

 

SUBMITTING YOUR ABSTRACT

The closing date for submissions is 30th June 2013 and the ICPA Program Committee will inform you of the outcome shortly after this date. Any questions or further information can be obtained from the Program Committee via email at contacticpa@icpa.ca.

Submissions are to be made using this online form and in English, including:

i) The abstract submission form completed in its entirety. Please keep this concise and to the point; and
ii) A brief professional biography for the author and for any co-authors intending to participate in the presentation at this year's annual conference (1000 characters max).

Once you have completed all of the fields you should click the “submit abstract” button. We will reply to the primary author notifying you of our decision. If your abstract is accepted we will contact you for more information if necessary.

Important: Accepted presenters must register for the Conference to be included on the program.

For ease of submission we recommend that you type your abstract first and then copy/paste the information into our online form. Your submission is not edited by ICPA and the information you provide here may appear in a printed format at the event or in event publicity – please review and ensure the accuracy and suitability of your entry before sending.

If your abstract is accepted you should note that Powerpoint presentations should ideally be below 10MB in size and submitted to fraserbryans@icpa.ca prior to the event in order to check compatibility with our systems on-site. We accept Powerpoint presentations in Office 2010 (.pptx) format as well as previous versions.

The presentations used during the event will be made available to members of ICPA following the event - if your presentation is not for distribution then please let us know prior to the conference.
