Health in Prison and Throughcare: Provision and continuity of care for those in the criminal Justice System
5-7th October 2011
The main theme of the conference will be throughcare for prisoners. This is a broad theme that will involve such issues as prisoners with problematic drug and/or alcohol use, communicable diseases, mental health care and other health issues.
The conference will provide an opportunity for delegates to:
• Assess the current availability of throughcare;
• Analyse the problems of provision and sustainability of throughcare;
• Consider existing models of throughcare;
• Discuss why continuity and care for “people in transition” is sometimes problematic;
• Propose an integrated approach that meets the multiple needs of offenders in the CJS;
• Exchange information and engage in discussions with fellow criminal justice professionals, community organisations and researchers;
• Agree a position paper that stipulates the conditions necessary to provide sustainable throughcare.
The conference will be of interest to all organizations where people are detained – police arrest, police arrest houses, prisons (sentenced and pre-sentenced) and detention centres for migrants. The conference will also be of interest to community organizations that provide services for prisoners while in detention and when they are released; policy makers, criminal justice professionals, researchers, academics, practitioners and representatives from the media.
There will be an opportunity for a prison visit on the Saturday after the conference or, alternatively, the Wednesday before the conference starts - this will be confirmed in due course.
The call for suggestions for workshops and papers on key conference themes can be found on the conference website: http://www.throughtcare2011.eu

14th National Conference on Adult & Juvenile Female Offenders. Sponsored by the Association on Programs for Female Offenders (APFO)
Salt Lake City, Utah is your destination for the 14th National Conference on Adult and Juvenile Female Offenders. The 2011 conference is hosted by the State of Utah, Division of Juvenile Justice Services and co-sponsored by The Association on Programs for Female Offenders (APFO).
The theme for this year’s conference, Reaching New Peaks, challenges each one of us to rise to the next level of services provided through our systems of care. We encourage you to come together and share your backgrounds and experience as we work toward our common goals: Addressing needs, policy implications, practices, management and treatment of female offenders in the adult and juvenile systems.
Workshops, guest speakers, exhibits, socials, and personal networking set the stage for our exchange of best practices. What better venue for “Reaching New Peaks” than Salt Lake City, which has a backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. On behalf of the conference planning committee, we invite you to attend five days of stimulating and informative presentations related to the management and treatment of this diverse population.
